Clinical Dosimetry

Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy
  • ApresentaçãoPresentation
The Curricular Unit of Clinical Dosimetry addresses the theoretical and practical aspects of Clinical Dosimetry in the context of radiotherapy treatments. Methodologies in clinical dosimetry are presented and discussed, as well as practical aspects of different planning systems. Directives and recommendations for this practice are also addressed.
  • ProgramaProgramme
Theoretical classes Treatment Planning Process Objectives guiding planning (ICRU 50); Basic Concepts in Clinical Dosimetry: Definition of Volumes, Isocenter and Treatment Techniques; Introduction to planning systems (TPS); Main differences between calculation algorithms, present in the TPS The use of different imaging modalities in planning Planning Techniques: 2D, 3D CRT, IMRT, VMAT, Dynamic Conformational Arc and dose plan evaluation   Practical classes Delimitation and Recognition of volumes of interest, using the different modalities of image; Familiarization with the different TPS tools Monitoring and elaboration of planimetry in TPS, for different clinical cases
  • ObjectivosObjectives
Understand the basic concepts, theoretical and practical, inherent to the clinical dosimetry process; Master the scientific language of clinical dosimetry in Radiotherapy; Understand the steps that make up the preparation of dosimetric planning Know the different systems planning; Take note of the main ICRU 50 directives and know how to identify key recommendations Use planning systems to perform dosimetric planning in external radiotherapy; Interpret, analyze and evaluate the various solutions for dosimetric planning Recognize the major technological advances in radiotherapy today

  • MetodologiaMethodology
Expository and demonstrative methodology in theoretical classes. TP classes will be conducted mostly with practical exercises, promoting teamwork, self-learning, problem-solving and debate. Whenever possible, these classes will be taught in a clinical/hospital setting. The theoretical component is assessed by means of a written test, which accounts for 50% of the final grade. The assessment of the theoretical-practical component will be carried out through a written assessment instrument and has a weighting of 50% of the final grade. Each component has a minimum score of 9.5 points. The classification of all assessment instruments is expressed on a scale of 0 to 20 points, and the weighted value of the classifications obtained must be equal to or greater than 9.5 points.
