European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS)

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a tool that helps design, describe and implement study programs and award qualifications in higher education. The use of ECTS, together with results-based qualification frameworks, improves the transparency of study programs and qualifications and facilitates their recognition.

Why is it necessary?

By ensuring the comparability of higher education in Europe, ECTS makes teaching and learning in higher education more transparent and facilitates the recognition of studies. It is a tool to support the design of study programs that contributes to quality assurance and makes it possible to transfer learning experiences between institutions, improve student mobility and make the paths to a degree more flexible.

The ECTS system is closely linked to the modernization of higher education in Europe and is a central tool in the Bologna Process, which aims to make national systems more compatible.

How does it work?

Participating institutions publish their course catalogs on the Internet; these include detailed descriptions of study programs, course units, university regulations and student services.

The course descriptions include the “learning outcomes” (i.e. the knowledge students should obtain and the skills they should acquire) and the workload (the time students need to achieve these outcomes). Learning outcomes are expressed in credits. A student's workload varies between 1500 and 1800 hours per academic year and one credit usually corresponds to 25-30 hours of work

For more information on ECTS, see the website of the European Commission and Portugal's Directorate General for Higher Education and the ECTS User's Guide.

Student Ombudsman

IPLUSO Student Ombudsman The Student Ombudsman is an independent body whose role is to defend and promote the legitimate rights and interests of IPLuso students.

The Student Ombudsman develops appropriate initiatives to resolve the issues raised, promoting dialogue and finding solutions with those involved, in cooperation with the academic community (bodies, services and individuals), respecting the established rules and subject to a commitment to confidentiality.

Contact with the Student Ombudsman's Office is always welcomed. However, before doing so, it is advisable for students to first approach those directly responsible, seeking clarification and, if the situation persists, to raise the matter with the ombudsman, indicating the outcome they would like to see achieved.

For more detailed information, please consult the IPLuso Student Ombudsman Regulations.

When should I contact the Ombudsman?

You can turn to the Student Ombudsman whenever all communications have been exhausted, whenever problems persist or when issues are particularly complex, requiring exceptional reasoning.

The Student Ombudsman is also available to mediate a solution with local resources, in situations that involve discreet, patient, informal, but always independent, impartial and confidential mediation.

Students can individually or collectively submit complaints, requests for support and queries to the Ombudsman, as well as make suggestions, namely on pedagogical, academic or social action issues.

Contacts with the Ombudsman can be formalised via an online form.

The Ombudsman is also available for face-to-face consultations, by prior appointment via email to provedor@ipluso.pt

Submission of requests for opinions to the Ethics Committee

Ethical conduct in scientific research implies the application of principles, standards and guidelines of good practice, ensuring compliance with current legislation in all areas of research, especially clinical and human research. All research projects must be presented in a clear, objective and feasible manner. The text must demonstrate that the rights, interests, safety and well-being of the research subjects are promoted and preserved. The methodological approach selected must ensure that reliable results are obtained. It must be remembered that the research results are intended to produce knowledge that facilitates decision-making, which is so crucial in the area of health and people. Therefore, embarking on a research project requires responsibility not only throughout all its stages: conceptual, methodological and empirical, but also in the dissemination of its results. The ERISA Ethics Committee's opinion will be in accordance with ethical norms and standards, applicable legislation, national and international conventions and declarations, national authorisations and ethical approvals, with the imperative of protecting the dignity and integrity of all those involved at the different stages of the research process. ERISA's Ethics Committee will endeavour to assess requests for opinions that are submitted no later than seven days before the regular monthly meeting. If this does not happen, the requests will be considered until the following meeting.
