    In this course unit the learner is expected to be able to plan and develop a critical analysis of the History and Geography of Portugal . It is also intended that the student is able to understand the various aspects of the History and Geography of Portugal including controversies and controversial issues stimulating discussion and debate.

    1.History of Portugal Traditional History vs. New History The diversity of sources in the historian's craft (iconography, literature, press, ...) Medieval Portugal - political, economic, social, cultural and mental structures The Discoveries: Portugal, Pioneer of Globalization: Times of Expansion and Decline Absolutist Portugal Liberal Portugal: the Vintism The Constitutional Monarchy - political, economic, social, cultural and mental structures The Republic - political, economic, social, cultural and mental structures   2. Geography of Portugal:   Physical geography. Portugal and its location in the Iberian Peninsula in Europe and in the World. The Iberian Peninsula. The natural setting. Relief, climate, and natural vegetation. The archipelagos of Azores and Madeira. Human geography, population and socioeconomic aspects.

    Acquire basic notions about History and Geography of Portugal Encourage the critical analysis of the History and Geography of Portugal To develop interest for project work To lead the student to become familiar with the main working tools (bibliographical elements, sources, maps, ...). To formulate historically and geographically relevant questions Collect, organize and interpret information from various sources

    Use of active, diversified and supported methodologies in classes: (i) analysis and investigation of themes, flipped classroom, problem solving, PBL; (ii) debate and discussion of themes with contributions from scientific research; (iii) group work; (iv) field trips (Geography); (v) historical research (heuristic and hermeneutic); (vi) study visits, and (vi) participation in scientific events.
