Anesthesiology and Surgical Techniques II

  Curricular unit that allows contact with the materials and instruments necessary for the execution of safe anesthesia of animals, for the preparation of the operating room for various surgical procedures in the role of the veterinary nurse, in a clinic for pets and exotic animals, equine and farm animals species.
• ProgramaProgramme

  Oxygen therapy techniques. Types of catheter. Intraosseous techniques. Cut-down  Abdominocentesis. Thoracocentesis. Cystocentesis. Arterial blood collection. Blood smear. Blood transfusions and crossmatching. Blood typing. Bone biopsy and bone marrow aspiration. Bronchoalveolar and peritoneal lavage. Wound drainage systems. Vacuum systems. Healing and Complications. Dressings for contaminated and extremity wounds. Splints. Thoracic and pelvic limb immobilization. Stabilisers. Preparation of surgical block for peritoneal lavage, bone biopsy, bone marrow aspiration and bronchoalveolar lavage. Types of sutures and suture materials. Most common surgeries: flank surgery - correction of abomasal displacement, caesarean section, rumenotomy; claw amputation, and disbudding and dehorning. Anesthesia cornual, flank, epidural and limb (regional intravenous); Preparation of the field and surgical material for abdominal surgery; Dressings and splints in ruminants.  
• ObjectivosObjectives

  1. Observation and study of airway management, techniques of oxygen therapy, implementation of vascular access - catheterization; cut-down technique. 3. Know how to act in post surgery complications and surgical wounds. 5. Recognize types of threads and know how to make suture patterns. 6. Preparation of surgical block (PA and equine) / surgical field for abdominal surgery (ruminants). 7. Recognize situations where it is necessary to place and know how to place specific dressings for orthopedic surgery, dressings and splints in small animals, equine and livestock species. 8. Know the most frequent indications to perform cornual, flank, epidural and limb anesthesia in ruminants. 9. Know how to perform cornual, flank, epidural and limb anesthesia techniques in ruminants.

• MetodologiaMethodology

  A) Continuous Assessment: -Mandatory attendance 2/3 practical classes (except St. worker: additional evaluation defined by the teacher) Theoretical -2 evaluation periods: average of the 3 theoretical frequencies relating to S. Animals, Ruminants and Equines (approval for each frequency >9.5v) Practice -Average 3 practical notes (S. animals, Ruminants and Equines) (approval each component >9.5v) -Practical and theoretical component assessment transfers to exam. -Students don't pass one of the components (theoretical or practical), can only take the missing component during exam periods of that academic year -Ruminant and Equine Assessment: class attendance and respective logbooks -Assessment S. animals: class attendance and mini-tests in classes B) Exam Regime Assessment -Mandatory attendance at 2/3 practical classes (except SW). -Final classification = average of practical assessment (50%) and theoretical assessment (50%). -Final approval: final classification equal to or greater than 9.5v
