    Theoretical-practical course unit aimed at introducing the concepts of basic animal hygiene care, skin health and respective appendices, as well as notions of aesthetics of hair cutting.

    I-Preventive hygiene: hygiene and sanity in different species. Pregnancy, delivery and newborn; Members, hooves and nails; Food, water and excreta; Instalações, milking and transportation II- Animal Aesthetics:  III- Canine breeds:  IV- Dog Morphology V- Regions of the body and anatomical correspondence V- Aplombs in the dog, angulation of limbs, correction and importance VII- Dentistry: general characteristics. pathologies VIII- Sensory organs and their impact on animal aesthetics eyes, eyelids, ears, skin and fur  IX Ears: structure, hygiene, situations and possible solutions X- Skin: structure, function and skin appendages XI- Hair: characterization. Variations of color, lenght, texture, diameter and distribution. XII- Care with hair: bathing and brushing, clipping and trimming, grooming XIII- Anal glands XIV- General and race-dependent cuts XV- Therapeutic and non-therapeutic bath and products to be used
  • ObjectivosObjectives
    1-Acquire knowledge about hygiene techniques and pets beautification 2- Know the characterization of systems and identification of breeds of dogs and cats 3- To evaluate the general condition and detect skin lesions, as well as lesions in the attached organs 4- know the anatomy and physiology of the ear and assess their integrity 5- Identify the dental arch of pets and be able to recognize dental diseases  6- Make a morphological evaluation 7 - Acquire bathing skills with therapeutic action or not. Recognize the aesthetic and therapeutic utility of each shampoo. 8- Acquire generic hair cutting skills as well as suitable for different breeds in both dogs and cats. 9- Learn to elaborate all the techniques of point 7 and 8 within an animal welfare concept.

  • MetodologiaMethodology
    The lectures mainly use media resources (power point presentation videos) and e-learning software (Moodle) allowing the student to be in close contact with the curriculum throughout the semester, resulting in better and more consolidated acquisition of skills. In the practical classes it is applied the knowledge conveyed in lectures, through the evaluation and identification of different types of coats, possible skin lesions and proper hygiene, as well as making cuts (shears), baths and pet aesthetic care .
