  • ApresentaçãoPresentation
The Biochemistry curricular unit aims to introduce and deepen several general and fundamental concepts of this scientific area, allowing an interconnection with other specific areas, namely, Biomedicine, Engineering, Microbiology among others. The practice component allows preparation in the various techniques used in Biochemistry granted as fundamental tools in the preparation for future performance in several areas, specifically, in the area of research and in the area of Biotechnology and Biomedicine in general.
  • ProgramaProgramme

Water chemistry. 2-Physico-chemical properties of amino acids 3-Proteins and their characterization:    3.1-Structural aspects and function    3.2-Hemproteins: structure-function relationship in biological macromolecules: transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide (hemoglobin and myoglobin)    3.3-Enzymes: general concepts; enzymatic kinetics (Michaelis-Menten model) 4-Carbohydrates: monosaccharides and polysaccharides; glycoproteins. 5-Lipids: constitution and function. 6-Nucleic acids (RNA and DNA): structure and function.    6.1-The flow of genetic information: from the gene to the protein.    6.2-Recombinant DNA technology 7-Introduction to bioenergetics.    7.1-Glycolysis and fermentation, citric acid cycle.    7.2-Oxidative phosphorylation: electron transport chain and ATP synthesis.
  • ObjectivosObjectives
In the Biochemistry course, it is intended that students acquire the fundamental knowledge of the concepts related to the structure, properties, and biological functions of main classes of biomolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, peptides, proteins, and nucleic acids. The study of the main metabolic pathways and bioenergetics complements the fundamental aspects of biochemistry in general. These basic concepts are fundamental for the understanding and monitoring of other curricular units of the study plan. In laboratory classes, basic Biochemistry techniques were introduced, aiming to complete and apply the theoretical knowledge acquired.
