Clinical-Laboratory Microbiology II

Biomedical Laboratory Sciences
  • ApresentaçãoPresentation
Clinical Laboratory Microbiology II is a fundamental curricular unit for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of bacterial infections, aiming to establish, in the student, essential notions, the correct conduction of the diagnosis of the biological product from the collection methods, to the methods of analysis and interpretation. the characterization and identification of the bacterial strains responsible for the infection, the elaboration of an analysis report and the elaboration of a plan on how to orientate the harvests for an epidemiological control of the infectious disease. The laboratory module will complement the theoretical teaching. The main objective is to learn the different techniques of diagnosis of infectious diseases. Thus, it is intended that the student acquires the knowledge bases necessary and essential to the exercise of the profession of diagnostic and therapeutic technician.
  • ProgramaProgramme
Host microorganism relationship Clinical Microbiology (Pathogenesis of microbial infections) Systemic Infections Gastrointestinal Infections Genitourinary infections Infections of skin and soft tissue Respiratory infections including tuberculosis Eye and ear infections Infections associated with health care (IACS) The role of the laboratory in the study of the epidemiology of infections Good laboratory practices Quality control in microbiology laboratory Overview of test accreditation  Laboratory methods of infectious diseases diagnosis Pre analytical and analytical phases Study of the rules for collecting biological samples for microbiological examination. Microbiological examination (bacterial, mycological and parasitological) of different biological products according to pre-defined protocols. Internal quality of performed procedures
  • ObjectivosObjectives
    - Understand the pathogenesis, treatment and epidemiology of the most common infectious diseases in humans. - Understand the microorganism / host relationship, including host defense mechanisms and microbial virulence factors,  - Perform laboratory procedures used in the study of microorganisms and follow safety standards in Microbiology - Carry out the march of analysis of biological products according to the international standards of bacteriological diagnosis - Recognize equipment errors and fix them - Know the procedures for collecting biological samples used in the laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases.

  • MetodologiaMethodology
In practical classes, the student has prior access to the experimental protocols to be carried out in each class session, which allows for prior reading and preparation. These protocols are accompanied by a set of questions, to ensure individual preparation and, subsequently, the discussion of procedures and results.
