July 21, 2026

The initiative strengthens debate on Arts Education and opens new opportunities for research collaboration.

Lecturer Ana Rocha took part in the initiative "FAEB Dialogues – Art in Primary and Secondary Education in Portugal", organised by the Brazilian Federation of Art Educators (FAEB), in a session dedicated to reflecting on the role of the Arts within the Primary and Secondary Education curriculum and the current challenges facing Arts Education.

At the invitation of FAEB, Francione Carvalho moderated the discussion, exploring different perspectives on arts education and artistic practice in schools. The conversation focused on the place of artistic disciplines within the curriculum, the time allocated to different artistic expressions and the importance of recognising their value in the educational process.

During the session, participants highlighted the contribution of the National Arts Plan, the educational services provided by museums and cultural institutions, and local partnerships in promoting artistic experiences that go beyond traditional arts and crafts, placing artistic practice at the centre of learning, creativity and the development of critical thinking.

The discussion also emphasised the need to strengthen teacher education in the field of Arts Education, particularly within higher education, as a way of consolidating innovative teaching practices and enhancing the role of the Arts in educating future generations.

The meeting also resulted in an invitation to join a research group dedicated to arts education methodologies in initial teacher education within Portuguese higher education, reinforcing collaboration between researchers and institutions committed to pedagogical innovation and Arts Education.
