Applied research carried out at IPLUSO highlights the importance of collaboration between higher education institutions and technology companies
The lecturer and researcher Luís Miguel Pires from the School of Engineering and Technologies (EET) at IPLUSO, together with the company Sensefinity, have published the scientific article “System Design of a Low-Power BLE Smart Label SoC with Dynamic E-Paper for QR Rendering and Temperature Sensing” in the international journal Designs (MDPI), ranked in the first quartile (Q1) of its scientific field.
The developed work presents the design and implementation of an ultra-low-power smart electronic label, integrating Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communications, temperature monitoring and a monochrome e-paper display capable of dynamically updating QR codes.
The proposed solution is based on the HY0020 SoC, enabling the combination of wireless communication, environmental data acquisition and visual information updates within a compact and energy-efficient platform. Potential applications include product traceability, smart logistics, cold chain monitoring, inventory management, digital asset identification and other solutions within the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm.
The results demonstrate the feasibility of battery-powered smart labels with high operational autonomy and low energy consumption, representing a promising alternative to conventional paper labels and more complex electronic systems.
