Scientific research highlights a preference for calm, natural destinations and identifies the Azores as a benchmark for inclusive tourism
A study led by Professor Ana Rita Conde (Lusófona University – Porto), with Professor Marco Martins (ESCAD-IPLuso), published in the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Insights (Scopus Q1), reveals that families with children on the autism spectrum prefer natural destinations with low sensory stimulation and personalised services.
Based on data from 137 families worldwide, the study identified the Azores as an ideal destination, although adaptations are required, such as calm spaces, visual resources and professional training, to effectively meet the needs of this audience.
