IPLUSO project focuses on identifying enzymes capable of degrading polyurethane microplastics
The PURE – PolyUrethane Recognition by Enzymes project, developed by Professor Bruno Victor and his team, was recognised with the Fazer+ Research Excellence Award, an initiative by Ensino Lusófona that recognises research projects for their scientific quality, innovation and potential impact.
The award was announced during the 6th edition of the Criar Ciência e Fazer Inovação made in Lusófona event, held on 10 September at the Agostinho da Silva Auditorium at Lusófona University.
The PURE project aims to develop an innovative computational platform to identify and optimise enzymes capable of recognising and degrading polyurethane microplastics, one of the most persistent emerging pollutants in ecosystems.
By combining computational biology, biotechnology and chemistry, the project aims to accelerate the discovery of sustainable biocatalysts and contribute to innovative solutions to combat plastic pollution and promote the circular bioeconomy.
The project forms part of the scientific research conducted by CBEL – Computational Biology and Enzyme Laboratory, an IPLUSO research group coordinated by Professor Bruno Victor.
This distinction raises the profile of applied Research carried out at IPLUSO and highlights the scientific work undertaken by its lecturers and researchers in areas of environmental, technological and social relevance.
