Lusophone Polytechnic Institute and Ciência Viva Launch Workshops for 12th Graders

15 april 2025

Initiative offers hands-on experiences in Robotics, Programming, and the Internet of Things to Year 12 students

The Polytechnic Institute of Lusophony (IPLUSO), through its School of Engineering and Technologies (EET), will run a new edition of the Scientific Holiday Programme for Young People, in partnership with the Ciência Viva Programme. This initiative includes four technology-focused workshops aimed specifically at Year 12 secondary school students, with the goal of inspiring scientific interests and providing practical experiences in innovation and technological development.

In an accessible, interactive, and practical format, participants will have the chance to explore current and exciting topics such as Creative Robotics, Mobile Application Development, Programming with Microcontrollers (MicroPython), and the Internet of Things (IoT, with LoRa/LoRaWAN). These workshops are designed for students interested in science, technology, and innovation. Participation requires prior registration and places are limited.

Programme

Robotics with Art | 07 July

  • Time: 09h30
  • Location: Polytechnic Institute of Lusophony (IPLUSO)

In this workshop, participants will combine engineering and creativity, developing robotic projects using Arduino-based platforms. Through challenges such as controlling omnidirectional robots, line following, or obstacle avoidance, students will discover how technology can also be a form of artistic expression.

Mobile Programming | 10 to 11 July

  • Time: 09h30
  • Location: Polytechnic Institute of Lusophony (IPLUSO)

Designed for those wishing to take their first steps into mobile development, this workshop offers an introduction to Android Studio. Participants will create their own Android app, learning fundamental programming concepts in Java, interface design (UI/UX), and app architecture.

Creative Programming with MicroPython for Raspberry Pi Pico | 08 July

  • Time: 09h30
  • Location: Polytechnic Institute of Lusophony (IPLUSO)

This workshop is dedicated to microcontroller programming using MicroPython and the Raspberry Pi Pico. Participants will learn to develop interactive projects that integrate sensors, actuators, and control logic, connecting the physical and digital worlds in a fun and practical way.

Development of IoT Devices for LoRa/LoRaWAN Networks | 09 to 10 July

  • Time: 09h30
  • Location: Polytechnic Institute of Lusophony (IPLUSO)

In the final workshop, students will explore the world of the Internet of Things by creating devices with LoRa/LoRaWAN connectivity—ideal for long-range, low-power communication. They will be introduced to the integration of these systems with cloud platforms, developing real and functional IoT solutions.

With this initiative, the Polytechnic Institute of Lusophony offers young people a unique opportunity to explore the world of science and technology in a practical, creative, and stimulating way. More than just a way to spend the holidays, these workshops represent a true gateway to fields with great potential for growth and innovation. For many, it may be the first step in a promising academic or professional path—or even the start of a lifelong passion.
