ApresentaçãoPresentationThis course aims to provide students with a first approach to the basic principles of visual language and communication, addressing the different media but focusing particularly on drawing and illustration. The guiding principle of this course is to provide students with a theoretical base, while trying to promote creative and critical thinking, through the analysis, interpretation or creation of visual messages from a variety of media and digital platforms

ProgramaProgramme1. Visual Perception and Form Theory: Light, colour and vision; Colour, light and pattern: visuality and contrast; Visual Perception and Form Theory; Gestalt principles; Visual techniques: communication strategies. 2. Composition, Language and Communication: Introduction to visual language; Basic elements of language and visual communication; Application of graphic and compositional principles: form, structure, scale, synthesis, contrast, proportion and hierarchy, colour, interaction, movement, tension; Geometry: surface, space and perspective; Unity, balance, proportion and harmony; Movement: time, rhythm, repetition.

ObjectivosObjectives- To frame the field of communication and visual language in history and to acquire knowledge about the role of visual perception in the interpretation and production of graphic projects; - To identify, understand and apply the grammar of visual communication and visual language; - To be able to interpret and analyze the visual communication of images and their messages, implicit and explicit, in physical or digital support and in different social contexts; - To stimulate the capacity of reasoned analysis through critical reflection on the themes addressed;

MetodologiaMethodologyThe teaching methodology consists of oral and visual presentation (Slideshow, movies and documentaries, artworks, illustrations, artist’s books) followed by debate in class, including the application of theoretical knowledge to practical situations through assignements during class. In addition, visits to artists' ateliers, galleries and museums will be organized, as well as invitations to artists and illustrators to present and discuss their working process in class. Research methodologies for writing essays will also be covered. Moodle will be the privileged platform for communication and interaction with students regarding the provision of teaching materials, multimedia resources, announcements, lesson planning, distribution of statements and scheduling of the various assessment moments.
