ProgramaProgrammePART I ORAL EXPRESSION The architecture of a speech Phonic Competence: voice, diction and articulation Prosodic Competence: rhythm, intonation and emphasis Lexical Competence: richness, variation and appropriateness of vocabulary Syntactic Competence: syntactic rules and use of speech articulators Pragmatic Competence: The cohesion and coherence of discourse The lexical and argumentative operators The principles of linguistic politeness Other Competences: face and body language PART II WRITTEN EXPRESSION Intentions and text types (CV, formal letter, report, complaint, scientific article) Lexical Competence: richness, variation and appropriateness of vocabulary Syntactic Competence: syntactic rules and use of speech articulators Pragmatic Competence: Language formalities Use of correct professional titles Spelling and punctuation (special emphasis on the use of the comma)

ObjectivosObjectivesThis curriculum unit presents a very practical approach for clear and effective communication, providing students with tools and techniques in order to improve their oral and written expression. After attending this curricular unit, students should be able to: Communicate with clarity and linguistic accuracy; Master the different levels of the Portuguese Language: Phonetics, lexicon, syntax and pragmatics; Master the rules of spelling and punctuation; Improve communication skills, directed to the clarity and effectiveness of the message; Know how to tailor communication in different contexts and to different audiences; Know the specificity of various types of text, in order to promote versatility in written communication.

MetodologiaMethodologyThe sessions will be predominantly practical, although there is a whole set of theoretical orientations which should precede the exercises. The methodology will therefore be based on the following strategies: a) diagnosing and sensitizing activities; b) explanation of aspects and strategies that might enhance and develop students’ performance; c) resolution of questions and correction of frequent mistakes; d) the completion of oral and written activities in order to apply recently acquired knowledge and strategies.
