    The Public Health II curricular unit has a program oriented towards zoonotic diseases, hygiene, and food safety, focused on the "farm to fork" strategy. Its objective is to empower the student, a future veterinary nurse, with basic knowledge and tools for both general and specialized practice, aiming to promote human and animal health based on a "One Health" approach

    1. Food safety systems from the "farm to the fork" encompassing various sectors: primary sector, meat industry, food retail, catering and dairy industries. 2. Food safety in the context of national defense, addressing: natural catastrophes, food defense and bioterrorism. 3. Veterinary public health at the community level. 4. Veterinary public health in the environmental context. 5. Zoonotic diseases and surveillance systems. 6. One Health - concepts and principles. The role of the veterinary nurse.
  • ObjectivosObjectives
    At the end of this Curricular Unit, the student should be able to:   1. Understand the importance of veterinary nursing in the defense of Public Health. 2. Recognize the different roles of veterinary nursing in the context of Public Health. 3. Implement control mechanisms to reduce the risk for consumers in the context of food safety systems. 4. Recognize and apply the national legislation in the area of Public Health and its relation to European legislation and international standards in force. 5. Understande the role of the veterinay nurse in the control of zoonoses. 6. Recognize the importance of veterinary nursing in the promotion of the One health approach.

  • MetodologiaMethodology
    Teaching Theoretical classes: master classes for exposition of the program component throught audiovisual media. Theoretical-practical classes: tutorial classes, aimed at applying the concepts learned in lectures, through the implementation and discussion of case studies. Laboratorial classes: tutorial classes, with laboratory techniques and mimicking real-life scenarios. Evaluation Continuous  Theoretical: 2 written frequencies; seminar presentation. Practical: oral presentation; report; laboratory procedure elaboration. Approval in both practical and theoretical evaluations requires a min of 9.5 points, each. Mandatory attendance in 2/3 of the theoretical and practical classes. Students with special status who fail to meet the minimum attendance requirement will undergo an oral assessment Final exam In case of non-approval in continuous evaluation, the final classification will correspond to the average of 50% for the practical evauation and 50% for the theoretical evaluation.
