Representational Drawing I

Illustration and Drawing
  • ApresentaçãoPresentation
Introductory class to observational drawing practices and exploration of languages and representation techniques.
  • ProgramaProgramme
Introduction to drawing as an autonomous art practice throughout observation registers; exploration of tools, media and supports, learning process and methods proper to a authors’ drawing project; using manual techniques:  - Exercises to release of constraints  (gesture and graphic fluency); - Direct observation design; - Mastery of grafic instruments and drawing techniques (dry, wet and errors); - To explore materials,  instruments and less harmful supports; - Diagrammatic Exercises;  - Exercises to explore graphic languages with different materials;  - Exercises to explore volumetric representation on a bi-dimensional level;  - Linear perspective and shadows (proper and projected);  - Noc¿a¿o e aplicac¿a¿o adequada de escala, enquadramento e composic¿a¿o; - Personal Project: graphic diary (2 drawings per week).
  • ObjectivosObjectives
This UC aims to:  - The identification, recognition and application of basic drawing terminologies, tools and methods, in a relevant and appropriate way; - The development of drawing as an instrument of thought and the improvement of perceptual and visual acuity; - The understanding of drawing as a mechanical relationship between perception (look) and representation (hand); - The identification of the concept of spatial perception and its representation. Notions of size (scale and proportion), distance (breadth and depth), mapping and measurement, full and empty, line and spot; - The identification and distinction between drawing strategies: sketch, sketch, study, project, finished and ilustrative; - To explore graphic instruments and materials and their behavior on different supports;  - To develop autonomous work skills.

  • MetodologiaMethodology
Presentation of exercises with demonstration of examples and methodologies; critical analysis at the end of classes on all the work carried out. Mostly, the exercises are based on observational drawing of three-dimensional models (natural elements, still life, objects, spaces and body). All techniques presented precede the exercise with a theoretical presentation and visual references, where the objectives to be achieved are explained. In a specific exercise, photography and memory will be used. Overall, the proposed contents and works promote experimentation and reflection on drawing and graphic expression. Guidance is continuous and individualized. The tutorial relationship is privileged. At the end of the class, students are always invited to observe their classmates' work. Assessment moments are carried out through an exhibition of the work carried out.
