    Zootecnics encompasses definitions of the different animal production systems, including alternative production systems, and their use by main livesotck species (sheep and goats, beff and dairy cattle, swine, poultry and horses). Worlwide, European and National census of different livestock species, as well their products and comercialization are also relevant. Local breeds, quality products and certification strategies are also interesting concepts. Finally, knowledge about nutritional, reproductive and sanitary management is essential for Veterinary Nursing Professionals.

Pigs: national and exotic breeds; identification; feeding and reproductive management; facilities Poultry Production and Rabbits: Breeds and production systems; facilities Equine Production: National and exotic breeds; leading indicators (reproductive and productive); nutrition and feeding of horses; facilities Alternative production systems: ecological and integrated production; certification schemes
  • ObjectivosObjectives
    Provide theoretical and practical knowledge on the identification, capabilities and form of exploitation of the different livestock species of national interest;   To acquire knowledge on the main morphological characteristics of animals, forms of identification and  Recognize the animal populations present in Portugal and their biological cycles or production;   Know what the main Portuguese and exotic breeds of bovine, ovine, caprine, equine, poultry and rabbits   To acquire knowledge on various types of animal facilities;   To know on alternative production systems and certification schemes of animal production.
