Students visited the exhibition "Lisbon in Revolution, 1383-1974", reflecting on resistance and social changes throughout history

In January, students from the CTESP in Child and Youth Support at IPLUSO participated in a study visit to the Museum of the City – Palácio Pimenta, where they had the opportunity to explore the temporary exhibition "Lisbon in Revolution, 1383-1974".

This initiative was part of the Higher Education Reading Club and was integrated into the curriculum of several courses, with the aim of complementing the knowledge acquired in the classroom and broadening the students' reading horizons.

In the year marking the 50th anniversary of the April 25, 1974 Revolution, the exhibition invites reflection on various moments of rupture and transformation that shaped the city of Lisbon from the Middle Ages to the present day. Throughout the exhibition, six key historical periods are highlighted: 1383-85, 1640, 1820, 1836, 1910, and 1974, allowing visitors to understand the role of resistance and the political, social, and cultural changes that shaped Portuguese society.

The exhibition explores these events through the perspective of specific figures and the locations where they took place, analysing the changes in the city's historical and political landscape. The curation is led by Daniel Alves, an integrated researcher at the Institute of Contemporary History at NOVA FCSH, ensuring a thorough and engaging approach.

During the visit, IPLUSO students showed great interest and curiosity, recognising the importance of studying the historical processes that led to the conquest of freedom and human rights. The experience reinforced the awareness of the need to preserve and value freedom, highlighting the idea that it comes with responsibility – a fundamental principle to be worked on in education from an early age.

This study visit represents another initiative by IPLUSO in promoting critical thinking and the cultural enrichment of its students, encouraging them to reflect on the past in order to better understand the challenges of the present and future.
