Objetivos de Desenvoltimento Sustentável (ODS)

A Nursing undergraduate student aims to strengthen the humanisation of healthcare by seeking to optimise nurses’ time

Pedro Ivan Borges, a third-year student on the Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing at ERISA – Ribeiro Sanches School of Health Sciences of IPLUSO – Polytechnic Institute of Lusofonia, is developing a research project focused on the optimisation of clinical documentation in nursing practice, in collaboration with Helton Mendonça, a biomedical engineer and data scientist graduated from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL).

The initiative stems from clinical training experience, where it has been observed that nursing professionals spend a significant portion of their time using electronic health record systems, such as SClínico, which may affect the time available for direct patient care and the therapeutic relationship with patients.

In this context, the project aims to analyse the impact of the workload associated with clinical documentation on professional practice and to explore digital solutions that can make this process more efficient, intuitive, and centred on healthcare professionals, while always ensuring clinical validation by the nurse.

The solution currently being developed includes intelligent documentation support features, namely the automatic structuring of entered information and the assisted suggestion of nursing interventions, helping to reduce the time spent on administrative tasks without compromising professional oversight and validation.

The project is currently in the data collection phase involving nurses, alongside the development of a functional prototype of the proposed solution, with the aim of aligning technological innovation with the real needs of clinical practice.

This initiative seeks to contribute to the continuous improvement of the quality of nursing care by increasing professionals’ availability for patient interaction and reinforcing the humanisation of healthcare.

The project is currently under development and shows potential for future clinical application, with a significant impact on the organisation of nursing care.
