Objetivos de Desenvoltimento Sustentável (ODS)

Exploring chance as a driver of artistic creation and educational reflection

On 21 November, the 3rd-year students of the Bachelor’s Degree in Basic Education, within the curricular unit Integration of Expressive Practices, took part in the workshop “Between Chances and Possibilities”, led by the researcher Mafalda Alves Carreira as part of her PhD in Artistic Education.

The workshop aimed to explore the speculative, to embrace error as an integral part of both artistic and educational processes, and to foster critical thinking, addressing concepts such as chance, unpredictability, and opportunity in error. The session promoted an environment of plastic experimentation that valued indeterminacy, learning by doing, and creative freedom.

Structured as a game, with defined rules and timings, the workshop presented challenges that introduced disruptive actions designed to interfere constructively in the creative process. Without knowing exactly what would emerge, the facilitator and students advanced through a set of organically connected stages, allowing visual compositions to appear, transform, and gain meaning through the proposed stages. This journey encouraged moments of discovery and openness to the unexpected, creating space for expressive relationships and emerging interpretations.

The initiative was enthusiastically received and reinforced the importance of practices that integrate art, education, sensitivity, and reflection, highlighting the potential of creativity as a way of generating new ways of seeing, creating, and learning.
