Professor Paulo Sargento advocates the inclusion of Human Rights Education from pre-school education through to higher education
Paulo Sargento, a lecturer at the Faculty of Law of Lusófona University and at the Instituto Politécnico da Lusófonia (IPLUSO), and an Associate Researcher at the Centre for Advanced Studies in Law (CEAD), argued for the urgent need to include Human Rights Education, as both content and experiential activity, from pre-school education through to higher education.
On 10 December, on the 77th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in his capacity as President of the Liga Portuguesa Dos Direitos Humanos - CIVITAS, in association with the Agrupamento Escolar José Afonso, in Loures, he stated that Citizenship Education should have as its central content the main institutional expressions and ethical instruments relating to Human Rights, and presented a project on the assessment of teaching, knowledge, practices and attitudes towards this aim in Portugal, with the participation of several entities (Lusófona University, IPLUSO; ESEL; CEAD, CEIED; IJP; Universidad de Salamanca; and Liga Portuguesa dos Direitos Humanos - CIVITAS).
This year, the Liga Portuguesa dos Direitos Humanos awarded a medal of recognition and merit to Her Excellency Dr Catarina de Albuquerque (posthumously, for her remarkable work in favour of the Right to Water), and to the Association Transformers, for its highly meritorious work in promoting the inclusion of young people at social risk.
