ApresentaçãoPresentation
The study cycle in Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy encompasses the fields of Nuclear Medicine, Radiology, and Radiotherapy. Its scientific domains enable the development of a range of activities related to diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for the entire body. These include studies in diagnostic imaging such as Conventional Radiology, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Mammography, Digital Angiography, Bone Densitometry, and Ultrasound. In the fields of radiotherapy and nuclear medicine, it covers therapeutic studies, particularly in oncology, such as Radiopharmacy, Conventional Nuclear Medicine, Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Nuclear Hematology, Radioimmunoassay Dosimetry, and Radiotherapy, performing various therapeutic activities. Students of the Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy program earn a Bachelor¿s Degree after 4 years of study, qualifying them to work as Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technicians (CNAEF area: 725 ¿ Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologies).

ObjectivosObjectives
- Promote an understanding of the key concepts of biomedical physics that underpin the scientific, effective, safe and efficient use of medical devices, and that support the practice of medical imaging and radiotherapy; - Present the structure, function and metabolism of organs, cells, tissues and molecules involved in physiological mechanisms in health and disease, in order to identify and recognise metabolic and tissue/organ alterations; - Demonstrate the importance of imaging tests in the prevention, diagnosis and prognosis of diseases; - Demonstrate the importance of locally administered ionising radiation in controlling disease progression; - Provide tools for carrying out diagnostic imaging examinations and therapeutic intervention using radiation; - Develop communication skills and interact effectively with patients and other health professionals; - Promote research activities and the writing of scientific evidence; - Ensure the development of highly competent Senior Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technicians, guaranteeing safety in the performance of their duties; - Developing proactive skills in ensuring radiological protection and safety. -
DestinatáriosRecipients
- 12th year graduates; - Higher education course holders, CET holders and CTeSP holders; - Over 23s. -
CompetênciasCompetences
- Understand the structure, function and metabolism of organs/tissues in order to be able to identify any morphofunctional alterations, associating them with techniques whose principles are based on biomedical physics - Perform, evaluate and validate IMR techniques - Master positioning, immobilisation and radiation beam protection techniques - Identify the types of contrast, radiopharmaceuticals and other drugs administered in medical imaging studies, including the associated risk and regulations - Assess patients and their condition to justify and then optimise examinations/procedures - Manipulate exposure parameters and variables to optimise dose and image quality - Apply ionising radiation effectively, accurately and safely, within legal, ethical and professional guidelines - Recognise the limitations of the professional, seeking advice and guidance whenever necessary, in order to respect the dignity of the patient - Actively pursue the ALARA principles -
